Biltmore Estate

Hi friends!

I had a great travel experience, recently.  I could not wait to share it with you.
I was eager go to  Asheville, NC with my friends, N & A, to visit the Biltmore Estate.  We stayed over from May 1 – May 3.
This is a picture of me staring at the road, just dreaming about the rolling hills and the castle.
We arrived early afternoon on Friday and went to see downtown Asheville and, as we were all exhausted, we went to sleep and rest to continue exploring the following morning.
A beautiful and sunny spring morning awaited us as we got up and prepared to go to The Biltmore Estate. As we arrived, I wanted to take a picture in front of the castle, in perspective, so you could see my size compared to the size of the massive building. We walked around the house and I kept asking questions and followed along like a well behaved boy.
Finally we got into the gorgeous gardens and I couldn’t resist the urge to roll around the hilly grass and was so tired afterwords that I took a long nap.

Then we went to the playground and to see the animals.

The saddest part about the whole trip was when I had to go back to the Library, I was so sad as I got attached to my friends, especially to A. So they promised me that I could come along with them in future adventures.

Sending hugs to my great friends!  I look forward to seeing you again, soon.

My visit with Holt Elementary School

Hi everyone!

In February I went on a local “vacation” at Holt Elementary Language Academy here in Durham. The kids at Holt get to learn either Spanish or Chinese, and they also study all different parts of the world. The languages were really hard but I started to get used to saying “Nǐ hǎo” and “hola” (hello in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.)

Picture2In Kindergarten, I learned about Quebec in Canada and wrote the year in Chinese characters. In Chinese class with Ms. Ya Lee, we played a bean bag game while learning our colors and practiced introducing ourselves in Chinese. I also got to sing and dance with the students to the Chinese song 恭喜恭喜 “gōng gōng ”, or Congratulations! in English.Picture1

The first graders at Holt learn all about South and Central America. So I got to help the students work on a report about “Isla El Tigre” (Tiger Island) volcano in Honduras. In Spanish class with Ms. Galindo, the first graders showed me how to read and write words in Spanish.

Picture4Second graders at Holt learn all about Asia so we worked on a project about the Yellow Birdwing butterfly, which lives in southern Asia.   I loved when the second graders read their favorite books to me (after all, I am a library moose!) I also had lots of fun in art class with Ms. Govender.  We worked on an Indian Woman project called “Holi Umas”.  Holi is a festival in India where people throw colored powder at each other and celebrate renewal. Sounds like fun!

I loved my visit to Holt and hope to go back one day to find out what the 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are learning!

A trip to Kentucky!

Hi everyone!

I just got back from an awesome trip with some friends of mine. My friends and I traveled to Kentucky for an entire week. Even though it was a long trip in the car, we passed the time by singing songs, reading books, and running races outside whenever we stopped at a rest stop. My friends’ mom read the book The Witches by Roald Dahl to all the passengers in the car. He’s such a great author!

Hopkins Family KY 1We traveled through North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and through most of Kentucky all the way to Louisville. My favorite part of the trip was visiting the Louisville Zoo. We saw so many different kinds of animals. Have you ever seen a giraffe eat a banana? I have now – it was feeding time for the giraffes. We heard lions roaring too! There were also gorillas, rhinos, a tiger, a baby hippo and a polar bear! Even though I had such a fun time traveling and spending time with my new friends, I’m glad to be back home at the library. I’m looking forward to my next adventure – where you do kids think I’ll visit next?

Welcome Back!

Hello, friends!

I have missed you these last few months, and I’m sure you have missed me. I spent much of my winter sleeping and eating. While moose don’t usually hibernate, I personally don’t love the cold Hopkins Family KY 2and the snow. I much prefer the warm months of summer and the travel that you can do when the weather is beautiful!

Hopkins Family KY 3Speaking of travel, I am so excited to be back on the road! Right now, I’m all the way in Kentucky for the first time, and I love it! I’m with my good friends the Hopkins family, and we are seeing the sites and having tons of fun. I just wanted to share a few photos for now, and I’ll write more about our trip as soon as I get back.

Thank you for reading my blog, and I promise to be better about keeping it up to date this summer. And speaking of summer – are you going on vacation? Are you going to summer camp? Bring me along!! I would love to spend time with you and explore the world together! Stop by North Regional Library to learn more about how YOU can bring me with you on your next big adventure.

See you soon!

Love, Tommy

Spending Time in Durham

sleepover_doodle_sample_1Hello, everyone! I just returned from a great visit with my friend, Shannen. I had a blast at Shannen’s house. We went to a sleepover, a lock-in at church. I made lots of great new friends, and we did arts and crafts. We even cooked lots of food. It was a blast. Sorry I can’t stop saying I had a blast! 🙂

I can’t wait for my next great adventure with you!

Love, Tommy

A Trip to the Mountains

Hello everyone! I have missed you so these last few months, but I have been busy! I’ve been staying with my friends here at North Regional Library, and I’ve been traveling with Ms. Stephanie to many awesome schools in Durham. I’ll be posting many more posts to my blog in the next week or so to catch you up on what I’ve been doing. So let’s start now!

MountainsNC2 I took a trip recently with my two friends Caitlin and Adele to a special place in western North Carolina. We took a long car ride to get there where we got to see all kinds of fun signs and things out the window. I found two new stuffed friends named Zenya and Tigger in the car with us. When were climbing into the mountains my ears popped as we got higher.

Once we got to our cabin where we were staying, we looked around at the beautiful cabin that was made of all wood.   It had big logs on the walls and inside there was a wood stove and lots of fun games to play. On our bed we found a new pretty quilt. We had lots of fun with our Aunts and Uncles who are very fun to be with.

MountainsNC1Most days we went hiking around the cabin, finding fun trails or making our own through the woods. It was really fun to be outside exploring. While I was out, I tried to get a new stone for the stone wall out front, but it ended up to be too small to fit in the wall.

As we were packing up I was sad to leave the fun cabin and time with my friends. I can’t wait to go back there with them and go exploring more.

Hanging out in Durham

tommycarrietownes  In October I stayed with with Townes and Carrie here in Durham.  I thought we’d be traveling to upstate New York, but our plans were changed into a “staycation”. Even though we were relaxing at home, Carrie and Townes sure do keep busy!

I went everywhere with Carrie and Townes.  I felt so special because they would fight over who got to hold me – ALL THE TIME.  I went to choir, soccer, and many other places with them.  When we were home we read books, played video games, and watched movies.

One of the first days we put up Halloween decorations.  I dressed up in a bat costume! tommylionsI liked the skeleton and creepy spider webs in their windows the best.

Townes and Carrie played a game at a friend’s house with monsters in it called Dungeons and Dragons.  I just watched, but if I ever get to play I would like to be Tomolot, the half moose, half elf spearman.

tommycarrieOn Friday, we finally went to the zoo in Asheboro, NC.  It was so fun and interesting.  I saw so many animals like zebras, ostriches, loins, lemurs, exotic birds, hogs, pythons, and even gorillas. (But no other moose!?) The lions we’re scary, but the lemurs we’re so cute I wanted to take one home with me.  I was excited to learn how big giraffes were.  I loved looking at the cool animal skulls, too.

tommymaxcropI enjoyed being in their home and making trouble with the many other stuffed animals.  Max, the dog puppet was especially fun and we talked way too much!   Carrie and Townes’s dad said we even gave him a headache.  Maybe they will let me come back and trick or treat on Halloween.

A Wedding in Florida

Hello everyone! floridaI just got back from a visit to Florida with my friend, Savanna. We had such a great time, but boy, did we drive a lot! We drove 16 hours to get there and 13 hour on the way back. Phew! I sure have spent a lot of time in cars these past few months. 🙂 We drove to Florida so Savanna could be in her aunt’s wedding. Yay! I asked Savanna to write a story about our adventure, so check it out!

Tommy and I went to a wedding. Tommy never came out of the car because he does not like weddings! The wedding was in Florida. Tommy gets car sick, so he had a hard time going all the way to Florida.

Labor Day in Michigan with Ms. Stephanie

Family1Over Labor Day weekend, I traveled to Michigan with Ms. Stephanie and her family. We flew in an airplane all the way to Detroit to spend time with Ms. Stephanie’s mom and dad, and her brother and sister.

Airport1First, we stayed with Ms. Stephanie’s sister and brother-in-law near Ann Abor, where Ms. Stephanie went to college. It was so cool to see where she went to school and ate food, but she said it sure does look different than when she was there! While were in Ann Arbor, we explored the campus, visited the Farmers Market, and ate really amazing food from Zingerman’s Deli, one of the best places to eat great food.

Then, we drove to Flint, where her parents and the rest of her family live. We ate lunch at the Flint Farmer’s Market and got pedicures! Ramya really loved getting her toenails painted! The next day, we had a great big picnic and invited all of Ms. Stephanie’s family over. It was so much fun! I played with Ramya and all her cousins the whole day long. At night, we lit a fire in the fire pit, and Ramya and I felll asleep on the hammock.

AirportLoungeIt was a super short trip, and I wish we could have stayed longer. Unfortunately, my wish came true! We missed our connection in Charlotte, so we spent a few extra hours in a lounge in the airport. It was nice to have a private place to relax! Once we got home, we all fell fast asleep. I had a wonderful time with Ms. Stephanie and Ramya, and I can’t wait for our next journey together.

Exploring My Hometown: Durham, North Carolina

SummerReading2Hello everyone! I’m very excited to tell you about my adventures with Prince here in Durham, North Carolina! We had such a fun time together. I was sad to say goodbye to him. I asked Prince to write about our two weeks together, so check it out!

NC Natural Science Museum

It was a rainy Saturday in August, so we headed to the North Carolina Natural Science Museum in Raleigh, N.C. We saw a lot of interesting things. We saw ants, bees, and snakes. They even had a butterfly room! I think this made Tommy homesick. I believe he missed being out in nature.

So the next day, Eno RiverTommy spent the day with me at Eno Discovery Camp. Tommy met all the kids and staff at camp, and they loved him, of course. We had a bunch of fun. The camp was held at Eno River State Park in Durham.  He really liked being out in nature; I think that’s where he is happiest. We went on hikes, which was hard work but definitely worth it. We also went boating. Tommy even hiked all the way to Turtle Rock. At the end of the day, we were so tired, Tommy didn’t even say a word. He just fell fast asleep in his bed with his clothes on!

Botanical GardenWe took another trip to The North Carolina Botanical Garden, where we had a lot of fun. Tommy and I saw a lot of different kinds of plants and flowers. We also saw a lot of hummingbirds and birds. We took a hike through the garden. The Garden was divided up in sections, just like North Carolina. They had an area for each part of the state: Coastal , Piedmont, and Mountain areas. Each area had plants from that part of North Carolina. The Coastal Area had plants from the coast, like the Venus Fly Trap. Tommy was speechless!!!!

SummerReading1Finally, Tommy and I got to check out the Durham Library’s Summer Reading Finale. It was at the Museum of Life and Science. It was great to explore the museum, especially the dinosaurs outside. Tommy was really happy to see his family again, especially Ms. Shelley, who also works at North Regional.

Overall, I had so much fun with Tommy, and I can’t wait to show him more parts of Durham, soon!
